Ecosystem Strategy

An Ecosystem Strategy is a deliberate set of actions that an ecosystem and all of the teams within it will take to achieve its goals. It involves understanding the challenges in the market, identifying the core market segments, making the hard choices about where the different products will compete, and where not to complete, as well as the actions required to win in that space.

Purpose

Defining a clear ecosystem strategy helps the team focus on the most critical areas to drive success. It enables teams to make informed decisions about where to allocate resources, what features to prioritise, and how to differentiate the ecosystem from competitors.

Anti-patterns

  • Complexity Overload: Making the strategy so complex that it's hard to implement or follow.
  • Inflexibility: Not accommodating specific needs of different teams, forcing a one-size-fits-all approach.
  • Inadequate Orientation: Failing to properly orient teams on the strategy, leading to misinterpretation and inconsistent application.
  • Lack of Enforcement: Not enforcing the guidelines consistently, undermining the strategy's effectiveness.
