The Product Team Role

Each member of a Product Team is responsible for ensuring that the functionally aligned work conducted is of high quality. To achieve this the Lead recruits, manages and coaches aligned team members in the Stream Teams and defines the relevant principles to guide their work.

In addition, the Lead assists the product strategy by providing insights and perspectives from their specialisation.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Defining Principles: Defining the functional principles that guide the work of the aligned team members in the Stream Teams.
  2. Contributing to the Stream Team Structures: Assisting with the value stream definition, Stream Team allocations and ongoing management of the structures.
  3. Contributing to the Product Strategic Direction: Contributing to the product vision, strategy, Stream Team objectives and tracking the progress of the Stream Teams.
  4. Tracking Product Performance: Monitoring the performance of the product in the market and the performance of the Stream Teams in delivering the product.
  5. Recruiting: Recruiting functionally aligned team members for the Stream Teams and ensuring effective onboarding to get them up to speed quickly.
  6. Coaching: Setting clear expectations for their aligned team members in the Stream Teams and providing regular feedback and support to help them improve.
  7. Managing Performance: Looking after the performance of their aligned team members in the Stream Teams including conducting performance reviews and managing any performance issues.
  8. Collaboratively Designing the Culture: Working with the other Product Team members to define, design and implement the culture of the Stream Teams.

  1. Functional Principles: A document outlining the development principles that guide the work of their aligned team members in the Stream Teams.
  2. Product Strategy: A document outlining the current diagnosis of the market, the areas of focus and the actions required to achieve the product vision.
  3. Skills Gaps Analysis Report: A document outlining the skills gaps in the Stream Teams and the actions required to close them.
  4. Candidate Pipeline: A continuously updated list of potential candidates for the Stream Teams.
  5. Detailed Job Descriptions: A document outlining the roles and responsibilities of their aligned team members in the Stream Teams.
  6. Performance Levels: The different performance levels of their aligned team members in the Stream Teams and the expectations for each level.
  7. Development Capability Assessments: Assessments of the development capabilities of individuals to guide the coaching and development of their aligned team members in the Stream Teams.
  8. Individual Career Development Plans: A document outlining the career aspirations of their aligned team members in the Stream Teams and the actions required to achieve them.
