Process Vision

The Process Vision is a strategic document that outlines the desired future state of the product development process, highlighting the key objectives and the path to achieving them. It serves as a guiding star for process improvement efforts, ensuring alignment among stakeholders.

Purpose

The purpose of a vision is to inspire people to work towards an ideal future state. It provides a clear direction for process improvement initiatives, aligns stakeholders' expectations and efforts towards a common goal, and serves as a benchmark for evaluating the effectiveness of process changes.

Example

Zero blocking dependencies from idea through to satisfied customers.

Anti-patterns

  • Vague vision: "We will efficiently deliver amazing software products that meets the needs of our users". Sounds great but it is too vague to be actionable. This doesn't help people compare competing improvement efforts to see which is more aligned with the vision.
  • Mandating immediate adherence: A vision should be inspiring and aspirational, not a mandate for immediate change. It must be communicated as such so as not to demoralise and demotivate people.
