Performance Improvement Plans

A performance improvement plan (PIP) is a formal document used by managers to address and improve the performance of employees who are not meeting expected performance standards. The PIP outlines specific areas needing improvement, actionable objectives, and timelines for achieving set goals.

Purpose

The purpose of performance improvement plans is to help an employee understand and address performance issues in a structured and supportive manner. PIPs clarify expectations, identify performance issues, and provide a structured approach for employees to improve their performance.

Anti-patterns

  • Setting unrealistic goals: Objectives that are unattainable demotivate employees rather than help them improve.
  • Lack of support: Not providing the necessary resources or support for improvement.
  • Insufficient follow-up: Failing to regularly review the employee's progress on the PIP.
